We have met the surgeon , a Mr Botha. He informed us that Caroline will need to have a laproscopy. (a tube goes through her belly button with a camera). The surgeon wants to see what the stomach looks like from the outside. This procedure requires Caroline to go under General A. This will take place in one day on the 6th Feb. (she has a preassesment this Friday).
The Laproscopy will then determine what do to next. This could either be Chemotherapy followed by surgery, or just surgery with teh possiblity of chemotherapy. We are hoping for the latter. The operation should happen within 2 weeks after the laproscopy.
The surgeon assured that this cancer was caught in the very early stages and he used words like cure a lot. Claire is now our cancer nurse and she is simply brilliant (like all the staff). We feel that we are in good caring hands and we are still filled with much hope. They also noted that Caroline is in excellent health and she now has permission to feed up on chocolates and other stuff to bulk up. (please do not send us chocs - we still are going through the Christmas pile!)
After the operation to remove her stomach. They then do a "Post mortem" on her stomach and lymph glands. This then determines whether chemotherapy needs to happen.
If chemotheropy happens we are looking at a course of treatment lasting 6- 9 months!
Life without a stomach is possible, just different. Tell you more in another post
