Today we saw both the surgeon and the consultant to discuss the findings of an investigation done on Caroline's original diagnosis.
The investigation was initiated by the surgeon, after they found no cancer cells in Caroline's removed stomach. The investigation was done at King's college Hospital, where Caroline went originally. They looked at Caroline's original biopsy sample and they found cancer cells there. Further investigation was conducted by an independent person and the result was that it was highly unlikely that Caroline had cancer at all. There is a strong likelihood that her sample and that of another patient who had an identical procedure were switched in the lab. The other patient was given the all clear, only to develop stomach cancer later on. (thankfully they found him!!).
There is a very strong probability that she did not have cancer in the first place and the operation was therefore unnecessary. You can imagine the shock, upset and confusion that this has created in us.
The consultant apologised for the error and we are both very grateful for the honesty and transparency of both the surgeon and the consultant. We both feel that they acted on the basis of the original diagnosis from the lab and based on that information showed us the best level of care available. The surgeon will continue to look after Caroline, but some of the ongoing tests for cancer will be unnecessary.
We are now considering our next steps in this case. We have received some invaluable advice and assitstance from friends and other medical professionals. We are currently awaiting a copy of Caroline's medical records and a copy of the investigation report.
Do please pray for us especially that this does not hinder Caroline's continued recovery and for wisdom for the next step. We would ask you to give thanks that the medical team have been honest and transparent with us.

Oh my goodness Caroline, Ray. I am shocked beyond measure that this has happened.
I am so sorry that you have had to endure so much and to hear now that you were mixed with another patient.
We will all be praying for you over the coming weeks as you look further into this and Caroline and Ray your courage and wisdom and bravery is an example to all of us and I am very pleased to be your friend.
Much love to you all.
Liz, Chris and Kids.
I cannot imagine your turmoil at this horrific news. Having met you both at St Martin's weekend at Pilgrim Hall in July I was so encouraged by Caroline's strength as I faced surgery for bowel cancer the following month. I am now out of hpsoital and making good, albeit slow, progress.
I will keep you in my prayers and trust that God will guide you to whatever steps you take after this news, I guess it's all too easy to plough straight in, but maybe that's not always Gods way.
My thoughts are with you all as a family and I pray for Caroline's continued progress.
best wishes from Rowena
